L'innovation au cœur des emballages

Le 18 novembre 2013, Fost Plus, VAL-I-PAC et Gondola décerneront les Greener Packaging Awards. Ces awards récompensent les entreprises qui fournissent des efforts particuliers pour réduire l’impact environnemental de leurs emballages.

La cérémonie sera précédée d’un séminaire sur le thème « Innovation, marketing et écologie : l’emballage se tourne vers le futur ». Outre les exposés plus généraux, vous en apprendrez également davantage sur les expériences pratiques de Coca-Cola, Delhaize, Froggy, Ikea et Jules Destrooper.

Ma présentation s’intitule: L'innovation au coeur des emballages. Voici un aperçu des 2 thèmes qui seront abordés :
 
  1. Emballage : un partenaire actif ! Les emballages actifs entrent en interaction avec l’aliment ou s’adaptent à son environnement pour préserver, le plus longtemps possible, et de façon optimale, ses qualités organoleptiques et nutritionnelles. Les possibilités offertes par les emballages actifs sont prometteuses. La conservation prolongée des produits et la réduction au niveau des pertes dues à la dégradation des aliments procurent des avantages économiques considérables à l’industrie de l’alimentation.
  2. Emballage: un indicateur intelligent ! En proposant des dispositifs d’information qui «parlent» directement aux consommateurs, les emballages intelligents devraient permettre de garantir la qualité et la sécurité des produits jusqu’au consommateur. Les emballages intelligents intègrent de nouveaux systèmes d'étiquetage, qui mettent à la disposition du consommateur une information claire et objective sur l’état de conservation d’un produit

CHEP beverage trays reduce cardboard packaging waste, provide a 'one-touch' packaging solution


Pallet and packaging supplier CHEP Australia has been named a finalist in the Environmental Innovation category of the awards for the deployment of its beverage tray equipment pool for the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector.

The Environmental Innovation award recognises "new technology, design or research that results in significant resource savings, new approaches in sustainable practice or innovative change in environmental management."


The NSW Government notes that CHEP's beverage trays eliminate around 1,250 tonnes of one-way cardboard packaging waste each year from the beverage supply chain.

Designed as a 'one-touch' packaging solution, these trays can be used for storage, transportation and in-store retail displays, not only reducing the amount of packaging required at each point in the supply chain, but also significantly reducing transport fuel use and associated greenhouse gas emissions.

Global aseptic packaging forecast to grow 24% in next five years


New study estimates that by 2016, the world market for aseptic packaging will reach 153 billion liters, in 333 billion packs, with the majority of additional demand coming from South/Southeast Asia and China.

The world market for aseptically packed products amounted to 123 billion liters, contained in 269 billion packs during 2011, according to the new “Global Aseptic Packaging” report from Zenith Intl. and Warrick Research Ltd. Volumes have grown by just more than 5% a year since 2008, with South/Southeast Asia achieving the fastest rise at 22% a year.

White drinking milk accounts for 39% of aseptically packed products, with beverages responsible for 37%, and other dairy or food products making up the remainder. Aseptic filling has yet to make a significant impact in food markets, but there are some established niche applications; sauces, tomato products, and baby food are important new areas of development.

“The market for aseptic packaging developed in Europe, and the industry supplying it has been centered on Europe. This report shows the market shift to Asia in the past four years and raises the prospect of this continuing in the next few years,” comments Warrick director David Warrick.

Adds Esther Renfrew, market intelligence director at Zenith, “At a time of economic recession in much of the world, the aseptic packaging market has grown at more than five percent a year in the past four years, as the technology is well positioned to supply the needs of new markets and applications,”.

Other findings of the 2012 "Global Aseptic Packaging" report include the following:

1-     There are more than 13,000 operational aseptic filling systems worldwide and more than 40 companies supply aseptic filling systems.
2-     The largest regional markets for aseptic packaging are set to be China and South/Southeast Asia, both of which are overtaking West Europe as the former largest region.
3-     World use of aseptic packaging has reflected global economic trends. Usage has been static in much of Europe, while there has been rapid growth in many countries across Asia.
4-     Value-added dairy products will be a fast-growing area of demand for aseptic filling systems. In some regions, fillers are used for both ambient and chilled products.

By 2016, Zenith and Warrick estimate that the world market for aseptic packaging will reach 153 billion liters, using 333 billion packs. The majority of additional demand will come from South/Southeast Asia and China, where growth is forecast at 11% a year and 3.5% a year, respectively.

Plastics Today Reveals 2012 Packaging Predictions

1. Lightweighting in primary packaging has run its course: Anyone who's handled a bottled water lately knows that brandowner and packaging suppliers' work to lighten their products has reached a tipping point. Any less material in today's water bottle, for instance, and the transformation from rigid to flexible package is complete. As a result, look for brandowners and retailers, at the vocal behest of their customers, to start targeting wasteful or unnecessary secondary and tertiary packaging, reexamining goods from the case, carton and pallet level, all of which could mean continued changes for the primary packaging component.

2. Plastics bags and bottles will remain embattled: In cash-strapped governments around the globe, where economic uncertainly and hyper-partisanship have paralyzed nearly all other legislating, bag bans or bag taxes seem to be the one piece of legislation that city councils, state houses, and national governments the world over can pass. Almost every day in 2011, my inbox received news of either a new bag ban or a status update one on currently being passed. Plastic bottles have been getting their own attention as well of late, with Grand Canyon National Park weighing a bottle ban for 2012. This will not stop in 2012, and will likely increase until the law of unintended consequences kciks in and consumers and legislators realize some of the shortfalls of paper and cloth bags.

3. Biobased PET takes the lead: Led by Coca-Cola and Pepsi, the bottling industry has effectively pushed biobased polyethylene terephthalate (PET) into the lead of the group of materials hoping to replace petroleum-based plastics in bottles. Biobased replacements for PET, including polylactic acid (PLA), ultimately couldn't unseat PET due to end-of-life concerns over recycling or processing difficulties, while attempts at upping recycled content in the bottles were undermined by the lack of an unreliable supply stream of post-consumer PET. Coke and Pepsi's work to create a 100% biobased PET will have broad ramifications for the burgeoning bioplastics market, with non-fossil fuel routes pursued for all those base resins that have established themselves within various markets, including packaging.

4. Recycled content will increase: Apart from the bottle push, recycled content, more than biobased materials, bill have an increasingly important impact on packaging, with brandowners proudly displaying to the public any recycled content in their packaging, and in the process solving two problems: resource reduction and end of life. The use of recycled content will be buoyed in 2012 by advancements in sorting/shredding/cleaning technology as well as increased collection.

5. Industry association/supplier efforts to address litter will increase: Industry trade associations, resin suppliers, and plastics packaging manufacturers have seen the enemy and it is litter. To that point, these groups, which already announced anti-litter campaigns in 2011, will continue to do so in 2012. Continued increases in fossil-fuels, and all their derivative products, including plastics, will drive home the fact that plastic packaging is not a throwaway material.

Los Angeles Expands Recycling to Food and Drink Cartons

Juice boxes and milk cartons, the bane of some recycling programs, can be chucked straight into household recycling bins in Los Angeles under an expanded program the city created with help from the Carton Council industry group.

The group of carton manufacturers works with recycling companies, cities and paper mills to promote recycling programs for liquid food and beverage containers, the technology that makes it possible, and end markets for the material. In Los Angeles, the group worked with the city and the companies that provide curbside residential recycling services so that cartons for refrigerated and shelf-stable products like soup, broth, wine, soy milk, milk and juice can go into the blue collection bins instead of the trash.

Coors Light debuts two-stage cold-indicator packaging

The World's Most Refreshing Beer continues to out-cold itself, as Coors Light packaging now features a new design that tells you when your beer reaches the "peak of refreshment." As part of its upcoming Super Cold Summer, the brand is debuting the latest in cold-activated technology: New Coors Light Two-Stage Activation bottles and cans, which make it easy to see when your Coors Light goes from cold... to Super Cold.

Studies indicate more than 70 percent of legal-drinking-age men have put their beer in the freezer to achieve the desired level of cold. The trick is to know when to take the beer out. Now on Coors Light bottles and cans, the iconic mountains still turn blue when the beer is cold, and in addition, a new Cold Indicator bar will turn blue at the same time. Then, when the Coors Light temperature is at the peak of refreshment, a second Super Cold Indicator bar turns blue.

Starting this month, the launch of Coors Light Two-Stage Cold Activation will be supported in many ways from coast to coast. The brand is amping up its advertising support by rolling out 11 new TV spots touting Two-Stage Super Cold Activation. These include new creative featuring entertainment mogul Ice Cube in two ads, titled "Cold Talk" and "Cold Challenge," that depict a humorous stand-off between Ice Cube -- hip hop star, actor, screenwriter, director and producer -- and Super Cold Activated Coors Light in a battle over who is colder.

Coors Light is celebrating the debut of its newest innovation with an iced-out N.E.R.D. concert May 25 in Atlanta. Tickets to the invitation-only event are being awarded solely through local radio prizing and retail promotions, but for consumers who can't be there, the concert will be simulcast on the brand's Facebook page and on Ustream.tv. This is the first of many ice-clusive special events Coors Light is hosting across the country this summer.

From a digital standpoint, the Coors Light Facebook page will introduce "The Master of Cold," an online champion for Super Cold refreshment. His focus is on upgrading average consumer experiences -- how to go from cold to Super Cold. The Master of Cold will introduce and promote exclusive content and behind-the-scenes access on the Coors Light Facebook page and the brand's YouTube channel.

As an extension of the Two-Stage Cold Activation packaging launch, nearly 3,500 beer retailers who meet certain criteria to ensure Coors Light is Super Cold at the point of purchase will be "Super Cold Certified" this spring. The retailers will display a neon sign as evidence that the Coors Light in their store is Super Cold.

Global Active & Smart Packaging Market Trends

The increasing demand for fresh and quality packaged food, consumer convenience and manufacturer concern for longer shelf life of the food products is driving the market for Global advanced packaging technology for food and beverage market. The global market for advanced packaging technology for food and beverage is expected to grow to $23.474 million in 2015, at an estimated CAGR of 8.2% from 2010 to 2015.

Beverage Packaging News: Recycling, Vitaminwater and sustainability


For countries with adequate space and little recycling infrastructure, disposing of bottles in landfill generates a lower carbon footprint than recycling or incineration. SRI Consulting (SRIC) has introduced “PET’s Carbon Footprint: To Recycle or Not To Recycle,” an independent evaluation of the carbon footprint of PET bottles with an analysis of secondary packaging from cradle to grave and from production of raw materials through to disposal.


Now here's something you wouldn't expect. Coca-Cola is being sued by a non-profit public interest group, on the grounds that the company's vitaminwater products make unwarranted health claims. No surprise there. But how do you think the company is defending itself?

In a staggering feat of twisted logic, lawyers for Coca-Cola are defending the lawsuit by asserting that "no consumer could reasonably be misled into thinking vitaminwater was a healthy beverage."


A recent BeveragePulse.com report found that 94% of Americans are concerned about the long-term effects that their packaged beverage purchases and consumption have on the environment.

The free study, by Concept Catalysts and iModerate Research Technologies, also shows that recycling was cited frequently (45%) as the most important environmental concern for packaged beverages. Health concerns and economic issues also contribute to recent category declines in packaged beverage purchases.

The Future of Active and Intelligent Packaging in Food and Drinks

Awareness and interest in active and intelligent packaging is growing. Government funded projects which aim to introduce, evaluate, or initiate developments in active and intelligent packaging have been implemented. However, in the survey of food and drinks industry executives carried out for this report, 57.3% of respondents were "not at all aware" or "slightly aware" of active and intelligent packaging. These results indicate that awareness and understanding of active and intelligent packaging innovations and their resulting benefits will need to increase in order to facilitate more extensive uptake of these technologies.

The focus of active and intelligent packaging has moved from specific retailer and manufacturer driven benefits like shelf-life extension and spoilage protection, to include more consumer focused benefits such as freshness, quality and information. A range of diverse technologies and sectors are now relevant for active and intelligent packaging in food and drinks.

Key findings...

In the survey carried out for this report, 85.3% of executives stated that active and intelligent packaging will have ‘some’ or ‘a large’ impact on innovation within the food and drinks sector over the next five years.

According to the industry survey, freshness and quality indicators, temperature and time indicators, flavor and aroma releasing technologies, natural antimicrobials, self-heating and cooling technologies, were identified as the most important innovations for consumers over the next five years.

Food safety and traceability, food wastage and environmental concerns are influencing the uptake of active and intelligent packaging technologies in the food and drinks sector.

9% of all new food and drinks products launched over the period 2006 to 2009 were tagged with ‘fresh’, ‘freshness’, or related terms. 3.2% of new products launched were tagged with the term ‘quality’.

Emballage du vin : Le verre meilleur que le plastique

L’Institut des sciences de la vigne et du vin (ISVV), le plus grand centre de recherche et développement sur la vigne et le vin en Europe, vient de publier les résultats mi-parcours d’une étude à l'initiative de l'ISVV, financée par le fabricant de bouteilles Owens-Illinois.

L’objectif de cette étude était de comparer les caractéristiques organoleptiques du vin dans les différents contenants sur une période de 2 ans :
  • Bouteille en verre
  • Bouteille en PET Mono
  • Bouteille en PET Multi
  • Bag-in-box®
L’étude montre globalement une meilleure conservation des vins au fil du temps dans les bouteilles de verre, tant du point de vue des analyses chimiques (entrée d’O2, pertes en CO2 et en SO2), de la couleur des vins ou de la dégustation. Les résultats scientifiques semblent plus probants sur les vins blancs (oxydation marquée dans le plastique) que sur les vins rouges, tandis que la dégustation organisée lors de la présentation de l’étude pouvait sembler plus probante sur les vins rouges (meilleur volume du fruit dans la bouteille en verre) .

Tetra Pak lance les briques « vertes » avec Carrefour

A la veille de la semaine du développement durable, Carrefour et Tetra Pak annoncent aujourd'hui la mise sur le marché, dès le mois d'avril, des premières briques alimentaires certifiées FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), pour le lait et les jus de fruits. Objectif : en écouler 100 millions d'ici à la fin de l'année.

C'est une première en France en matière d'emballage de liquides alimentaires. A partir du mois d'avril, les consommateurs du lait de montagne de la marque Carrefour achèteront les toutes premières briques certifiées par le Forest Stewardship Council. Sans même s'en apercevoir, s'ils ne sont pas assez observateurs pour remarquer le logo FSC arboré par leur emballage habituel qui reste, par ailleurs, identique. Invisible à l'oeil nu, la différence se niche au niveau de la matière première essentielle, le carton, qui pèse 75 % de la composition d'un emballage Tetra Pak. En quoi est-il plus vert ? « La présence de cette certification garantit à l'acheteur du produit qu'il est issu de forêts bien gérées, respectant le plus haut niveau d'exigence sociale et environnementale », explique Stéphane Guéneau, président de Forest Stewardship Council France.

Amosorb: high performance PET barrier technology

Bottles news of the week: Recyclable and renewable

The "PlantBottle™»: Innovative bottle made from renewable, recyclable, plant based plastic


The Coca-Cola Company unveiled today a new plastic bottle made partially from plants. The "PlantBottle™" is fully recyclable, has a lower reliance on a non-renewable resource, and reduces carbon emissions, compared with petroleum-based PET plastic bottles.

Traditional PET bottles are made from petroleum, a non-renewable resource. The new bottle is made from a blend of petroleum-based materials and up to 30 percent plant-based materials.

The "PlantBottle™" is currently made through an innovative process that turns sugar cane and molasses, a by-product of sugar production, into a key component for PET plastic. Coca-Cola is also exploring the use of other plant materials for future generations of the "PlantBottle™."

Manufacturing the new plastic bottle is more environmentally efficient as well. A life-cycle analysis conducted by Imperial College London indicates the "PlantBottle™" with 30 percent plant-base material reduces carbon emissions by up to 25 percent, compared with petroleum-based PET.

Another advantage to the "PlantBottle™" is that, unlike other plant-based plastics, it can be processed through existing manufacturing and recycling facilities without contaminating traditional PET. So, the material in the "PlantBottle™" can be used, recycled and reused again and again.

Green Label bottles: 36% lighter, 100% recyclable and create 29% fewer greenhouse gas emissions


One of the premium wine brands of Australian-based drinks manufacturer and exporter Fosters Group is now available in a 750ml PET bottle that the company says has significant environmental advantages.

The company said the PET bottles, when empty, were about one-tenth the weight of a comparable standard glass bottle.

Fosters claims the new bottles are shatterproof and have been subjected to a “full life-cycle analysis” by Melbourne-based environmental consultant Net Balance Management Group.

The consultancy analysed potential greenhouse gas emissions from all stages of the winemaking process, from grape growing to bottling, transport, and recycling and disposal of the bottles and cardboard stock cartons.

Fosters said the results show the Green Label bottles are 36 percent lighter, 100 percent recyclable and create 29% fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

Toronto : City eyes coffee cup ban

The City of Toronto is targeting some of its biggest garbage offenders – coffee cups, takeout food containers and plastic bags – in a study that could lead to sweeping changes in the way residents handle their refuse.

As part of Toronto's plan to be diverting 70 per cent of its garbage from landfill by 2010, the city is examining ways to limit items that have a bad reputation for filling up landfills.

Proposals being considered for beverage cups, takeout food containers and plastic bags include:
  • An outright ban
  • A levy or tax on the items. (Charging extra would presumably influence consumers to use recyclable cups or containers.)
  • A deposit-return program similar to the provincial bottle return program, whereby consumers get at least a portion of their money back if they turn in the container, making the seller responsible for recycling it.
  • A proposal pushed by Councillor Howard Moscoe targets cardboard and plastic store packaging, most of which ends up in the garbage stream. Stores in Toronto should be required to provide space where customers can take their purchases out of the packaging and leave the garbage behind, Moscoe says. This would put pressure on the manufacturers – over whom Toronto has no control – to reduce the amount of packaging on their products.
